<p> Alexander Gardner photographed President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D.C., on the eve of his second inauguration. It was the last portrait taken of Lincoln before his assassination in April 1865 and it appears on the cover of <em>The Atlantic</em>'s commemorative Civil War issue. </p>
